BECOME YOUR OWN GUIDE
____________________
Have you ever eavesdropped on a local tour guide and marveled at the way they deliver a wealth of knowledge in easily digestible bits? The way they hit on just the right historical details to bring a painting or a building or an entire town to life? Often, they also weave in personal anecdotes and talk about how the subject matter has affected them firsthand.
A skilled guide tells a story.
Emotion and humor and well-rounded characters are all part of a guide’s bag of tricks. Even plot matters as all good tours have a beginning, middle, and end.
Travel & Culture Salon was founded on the belief that we all have the opportunity to be our own guides. To feel the high that comes when entertaining ourselves and others with a good story. You don’t need an advanced degree in a subject to have a meaningful travel experience.
Becoming your own guide simply starts with curiosity.
The secret is to take that curiosity and get started—somewhere, anywhere. Pick a detail, pick a course, pick a destination.
It takes about three months to fully appreciate the Louvre Museum. If you only have one day, do you skip it since it’s impossible to tackle in that amount of time? No! You pick a wing or a genre or an era, and you get started. Part of experiencing the Louvre is just being at the Louvre, even if you don’t take in the art at all.
History is about storytelling.
Travel is about extraordinary encounters.
Both can change the way we view the world and forge connections.

Hi, I’m Heather.
A cultural guide, writer, and women’s rights advocate—an explorer at heart, always in search of sharing the human story with you.
In 2021, I founded Travel & Culture Salon, a collection of curated online course creations for the history, art, and architecture lover.
I’ve designed my courses with the idea of just “getting started.” We’ll take a deep dive into a specialty topic and use it to open up a broader appreciation of the context from which it emerged.
My training and education are in medieval and Early Modern European history. I'm especially interested in the connections between the Old World and New World as well as representations of the past in modern art and culture.
Visit my website for travel inspiration and to read more about a variety of historical and cultural topics on my blog.
