Gargoyles have been an object of fascination for thousands of years. Even today, one can find them peering down at us from perches atop all sorts of structures, like churches, university buildings, town halls, and skyscrapers. But it was during the European Middle Ages when gargoyles reached their peak in popularity and hundreds of them could be found residing on the great Gothic cathedrals of the period.

These expressive and mostly hideous creatures would seem to be an unlikely decoration for sacred buildings, especially during a historical period characterized as dark and serious. Yet, medieval gargoyles were often artistic masterpieces, carved by highly skilled craftsmen. A great deal of imagination and time went into sculpting each one.

The history of gargoyles is captivating, but also a bit puzzling. What is the story behind these intriguing architectural ornaments?

This mini-course will transport you to the Middle Ages, where we will soar to terrific heights to catch a glimpse of gargoyles all over Europe. Countless originals still exist today, and from our unique vantage point, we will be able to examine this grotesque and fantastical imagery up close.
